CYborg.V#
Cyborg.v# is a vocabulary and ongoing exploration into depicting the cybernetics of being. It stemmed from reading Prosthetic Culture by Celia Lury as project for a class with Koosil-ja Hwang, a dance and media artist. At the end of the class I had identified the vocabulary and generated the first iteration in the research, Cyborg ID.
Cyborg ID started with a mini lecture on my research, while someone else duct taped a mobile projector and camcorder to my head. Once they were attached, a mirror was picked up and I slowly walked with a live feed of my reflection across the back wall. As a continual project, each performance yields a new version as my exploration into the ideas of cybernetics and visibility continue. So far there have been four iterations, Cyborg ID, Cyborg.v2, Cyborg.v25, and Cyborg.v3. Cyborg.v3, the latest rendition, was a duet that added into the consideration of the piece a series of ten interviews done with other performing artists. It re-incorporated the live taping of the elements to my head, but replaced the dialogue with an improvised relay of all that happened to me and the other performer before the show. This edition, instead of considering the performance as a composite organism as previous versions had done, was designed more to pay homage to the people that surrounded the choreography. |
